This version of the Kalachakra Mandala is decorated with four auspicious symbols. These symbols are known as Ashtamangala and they are depicted in the four corner of the thangka painting.
The Kalachakra Mandala was designed by the Dalai Lama as a visual tool for the Buddhist practitioners.
The central symbol of the lotus, representing the Buddha, is surrounded by a structure that reminds a palace.
Every detail of the mandala, each deity and symbol, have both a physical meaning (Outer Kalachakra) and spiritual symbolism (Inner Kalachakra) and they are interconnected by the doors of the structure.
This Mandala is symbol of inner peace and helps to restore physical and mental balance.

Among the most auspicious symbols there are also the eight auspicious substances and the five sensory offerings.
Starting from the top left corner clockwise: the white conch shell symbolizing Buddha’s proclamation of the dharma; the golden wheel with three swirls representing the Three Jewels of the Buddha, dharma and sangha, against the three poisons of ignorance, desire,and aversion; the pair of ritual cymbals are offerings to peaceful deities as the 3 jewels in the bottom left corner.
