From: $550.00
Lord Dhanvantari is the God of Ayurveda, the ancient Indian medicine known as the science of life.
He is one of the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, the protector of the universe and according to the Vedas and Puranas Dhanvantari is the physician of the gods.
He is also considered the author of one of the most ancient medical glossaries in the world called Dhanvantari Nighantu, the oldest book about Ayurveda ever found.
In this thangka painting Dhanvantari is depicted with four hands holding different objects. In his left hands he holds a vase containing Amrita or Soma, the sacred nectar of the Gods, and in the other hand the scriptures of the Ayurveda. In one of his right hands he holds a grinding bowl containing herbs while the other hand is in Abhaya Mudra symbolizing reassurance, protection and blessing.
Dhanvantari is celebrated by Ayurveda practitioners during Dhanteras that occurs two days before Diwali. He is worshiped for his power to prevent and cure deadly diseases and, as reported in old scriptures, nullify the effects of poisons and snakebites.
