Mahakala, represented in this beautiful and terrifying mask, is well known as protector of the Dharma for Buddhists and manifestation of Lord Shiva for the Hindus.
The shape and the details and the strong characteristic of this mask are common elements also of old shamanic masks belonging to Himalayan tribes. The shamans of these tribes use to wear beautifully carved masks of different shapes during rituals and dances with offerings for the mountains, the Gods of the Himalaya.
