The Bodhisattva Cundi or Chundi is very popular in Chinese esoteric Buddhism but her origin is linked to the Indian Karandavyuha Sutra and precicely the Cundi Dharani mantra. The sutra is based on Avalokiteshvara, the concept of Buddhahood, it introduces the mantra Om Mani Padme Hum and Cundi is referred as the 'mother Goddess of the seventy million Buddhas'.

Because of the close relation with the bodhisattva of compassion, Cundi is worshipped as manifestation of Guanyin in China and Kannon in Japan. In Tibetan Buddhism Cundi is a secondary female deity considered a dharani Goddess meaning that she is the personification of a powerful spell and linked to magical practices. She is sometimes also associated to Marici and the Hindu Goeddess Chandra.

Cundi can appear in several forms but the most common in thangka paintings is with eighteen arms. Being described as mother on the perfectly enlightened Buddhas, in Nepal Cundi is also linked to the Goddess Tara and for this reason she is sometimes depicted with a third eye as White Tara.
