For the Tibetan Buddhist tradition Bhairava is a tantric meditational deity and a Dharmapala with the power to protect from greed and transform anger and hatred into understanding.

The main characteristics of the mask of Bhairava are the bulging eyes the facial hair and wide open mouth, typical aspects of wrathful Hindu and Buddhist deities. On his head he wears a crown with five skulls and two snakes, a typical feature of lord Shiva.
People place the masks of Bhairava outside their houses near the entry to protect their families from spiritual enemies and negative energy.

The mask of Bhairava is famous for its role in the five days of Indra Jatra festival. Bhairava is the main deity of this Hindu festival together with Kumari the young living Goddess. They are joined by Indra, the ten incarnations of Vishnu and many other Hindu deities in colorful processions and masked dances.
